A McGuinness win will kill off united Ireland

I DO not support a united Ireland and consider a two-state solution on this island of ours to be the only viable and peaceful means of going forward together in our much-vaunted 'shared future'.

It is with reluctance, then, that I offer this piece of advice to voters in the Republic of Ireland who crave Irish unity - do not cast your vote for Martin McGuinness as president.

Support for the former IRA man by a majority of voters in the south will further alienate unionists in Northern Ireland and any rapprochement between the two jurisdictions will be set back decades.
