Abortion does lead to the ending of a life

Deirdre Gorman (Write Back, December 20) claims that human life does not begin at conception and that initial development is just a cluster of cells, which can be discarded as mere human waste.

Actually, in the first 12 weeks, the basic structure of organs, limbs, face etc start to form. To abort is to arrest an awesome process designed by God to make man in his image.

The Bible reveals that God recognises human lives in advance by his foreknowledge. For example, in Jeremiah 1, the prophet is told by God: "Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you, before you were born, I set you apart."

In pregnancy, therefore, two human lives are intertwined. The mother is not forced, in the words of Ms Gorman, "to have her body used to grow a baby to appease the morals of a small minority of modern Ireland", but, rather, is accountable to God for the life in her womb.

In Northern Ireland, abortion is allowed in cases where the mother's life is at risk. Nevertheless, a human life has ended.
