In the interests of self-preservation on our busy roads most cyclists now realise the need to wear high visibility clothing and to have adequate lights. However, many pedestrians do not realise how invisible they, too, are on dark streets. Everyone should be encouraged to wear high visibility jackets or reflective bands in the dark. Ordinary winter jackets for children and adults should be made with reflective bands as standard.
Many motorists seem to be reluctant to switch on dipped headlights in rain and dull weather yet modern car batteries are adequate to cope with lights being switched on while a car is being driven in varying conditions.
Cars loom up out of the gloom and expect other road users to know they are there.
Today, I drove to Downpatrick on a dull morning, returning back in rain, and on both trips many oncoming cars without lights were almost invisible.
