Amnesty abortion call based on empty rhetoric
Patrick Corrigan's apologia for the UN calling for abortion provision in Ireland echoes the same contradictory rhetoric Amnesty issues on a regular basis (Write Back, July 12).
Surely, the UN is condemned by its own third Article on Human Rights, which calls for everyone to have a right to life, liberty and security of personhood?
Similarly, Amnesty regularly states its fight against injustice with catchy soundbites such as the current hypocrisy of 'Protect the Human', and is actively seeking repeal of the Eighth Amendment in the Republic, which has saved more than 10,000 lives since 1983.Likewise, do the voices and presences of more than 70,000 people recently in Dublin not show Mr Corrigan that this was the true citizens' assembly and not a cabal of Irish political and social apparatchiks?
Sadly, until Amnesty returns to its founder's vision, it will only echo to the unborn the terrible words of Pol Pot: "To keep you is no benefit; to destroy you is no loss."
