Arab peace offer claim inaccurate

I THINK Mohammad Samaana (Write Back, October 25) is a bit confused about the facts.

He writes that the Arabs offered Israel peace for the creation of a Palestinian state in Gaza and the West Bank. What actually happened in 1967 was that Israel was threatened with annihilation.

After its overwhelming victory in a defensive war of survival, it offered this to the Arabs as part of a comprehensive peace settlement. The Arab response was "no peace with Israel, no recognition of Israel and no negotiations".

The question is why such a state had not been set up in 1948 when these areas were not under Israeli control?
