Armed forces flag must be allowed to fly

As a resident of east Belfast, I am disgusted and embarrassed that the newly-elected MP for East Belfast, Naomi Long, felt it necessary to vote against a motion to have the armed forces flag flown for five days at City Hall.

Young men from this city have fought and died so that she could have the privilege to stand for election.

As I write, the 1st and 2nd Battalion, Royal Irish Regiment are in final training exercises for deployment to Afghanistan in the next few months.

Many more Ulster troops are already deployed there at this very moment; many from the area that she represents.

This is an absolute slap in the face to them and their families who carry the burden here at home. Naomi Long should hang her head in shame, and the people who elected her should also. Now that you have seen the real face of Alliance, maybe you will think twice next time you place your vote.
