Attwood is an example to his colleagues

I HAVE been critical of much of the Executive's work, notably the recent Child Poverty Strategy, because it has been carried out with no reference to any evidence base.

I therefore welcome a notable exception to this from Social Development Minister Alex Attwood. His focus on the 0-3 age group in marginalised areas has demonstrated a willingness to make decisions and determine priorities based on the evidence before him.

All available evidence points to early intervention working well. Much of a child's developmental capacity is determined during the 0-3 period - children not receiving the appropriate support at that age will almost always remain at a disadvantage.

It is a political challenge for a minister to recognise investment has to be made where outcomes will not be immediately apparent.

Alex Attwood is to be commended and should be an example to his colleagues.
