Recently the Rev Ken Newell said that the World Baptist Association is in dialogue with the Roman Catholic Church.
As many will assume this includes Irish Baptist churches, I would like the opportunity to point out that the Association of Baptist Churches in Ireland isn't affiliated to the WBA, nor is it involved in dialogue with the Catholic Church.
It is also worth noting that the Southern Baptist Convention, which is the largest Protestant grouping in the USA with 16 million members, isn't affiliated to the WBA either.
As an evangelical Christian first and a Baptist second, I deplore sectarianism.
But I also refute Ken's inference that if you aren't engaged in ecumenical activity you are somehow sectarian.
Was Martin Luther, a priest in the Catholic Church therefore sectarian for leaving the Catholic Church five hundred years ago and establishing a Reformed Church, which he believed to be in accord with the Bible ?
