A Belfast beggar gets £125 a day, according to the Belfast Telegraph (News, August 3). How does the journalist know? Because - and I quote - "it is said".
Might the source be the tweedily-dressed man who verbally abused me on the Cregagh Road for giving a begging girl a few pounds? He was of the "they all have Mercs" mentality.
I don't believe this story for one moment, but I take Walt Whitman's view that, if you can afford it, "give alms to anyone who asks".
If they're cheating, that's for their conscience - not mine.
