Bombing Isis is not the solution

From my own role and experience of the IRA, no one could suggest that I am a "soft touch" on terrorism. However, I would advise caution against a decision to bomb Isis in Syria.

The Secretary of State for Defence has now admitted that bombing alone will not defeat Isis - it would require "boots on the ground".

In my opinion such forces will have to be mainly Muslim and Arab and, until that is in place, bombing on its own could be counter-productive. It could make the UK increasingly the target of an Isis terrorist attack.

Yes, it would be attractive to join the USA/France bombing of Isis in Syria, but they may be wrong. Two wrongs do not make a right. Yes, Isis must be defeated in Iraq and Syria, but firstly there must be an overall plan and not just short-term bombing in isolation.
