Bus lanes can be used by traffic at certain times

There has been much talk about how Belfast's bus lanes are worsening congestion. There have been calls for them to be scrapped. But something has been overlooked.

Traffic flow in Belfast would improve at a stroke if everyone did what they are entitled to do and to use a bus lane outside of the times on the sign (provided it is not 24 hours a day). Outside of the posted times, a bus lane is a normal lane, which all traffic can use.

The Highway Code states that is only an offence to "enter a bus lane during its hours of operation". Most bus lanes in Belfast can be used by anyone after 7pm from Monday to Saturday and all day on Sunday.

Some bus lanes are only designated thus during the morning and evening peak hours.

It drives me mad when I see queues of traffic next to an empty bus lane when they are perfectly within their rights to use it.
