As someone who worked in a responsible position in the Department of Education for some 28 years, I was horrified to read of the outrageous use of public funds and lack of accountability by another arm of the education sector, the CCEA (News, May 27).
When I was employed by the Department of Education, hospitality for visiting civil servants or educationalists, had to be approved and it was stressed that the element of a bill represented by drinks should not exceed one-third of the cost of a meal.
I am staggered that no-one in CCEA saw fit to query expenditure on drinks of four times the dinner bill. Does the CCEA not have someone who looks at these things?
We all now know about MPs’ cavalier attitude to public monies unveiled in the expenses scandal last year, but this is no less a scandal — particularly at a time of scarce resources for the delivery of education for our children.
