Churches a cause for cultural celebration

We at the Belfast Civic Trust would endorse Gail Walker's piece on the historic, cultural and architectural importance of the large number of Belfast churches (Comment, July 18).

There is a tremendous variety of styles of churches in the city and they could be marketed more as a tourism asset. Sadly, some are under threat - for example, St Joseph's in Sailortown.

Your readers may be interested to know that the Belfast Civic Trust is running a churches tour as part of European Open Heritage Day on Friday, September 8.

Belfast Welcome Centre also has copies of the trust's Belfast Christian heritage tour, which is self-guided and is very popular with cruise ship visitors.
