Clarity needed on smoky coal

I REFER to a most interesting article by Linda Stewart regarding the sale of smoky coal and its effect on asthma sufferers, showing that Northern Ireland exceeds recommended air quality limits (News, December 5).

Back in the Eighties, Belfast City Council banned all smoky coals and many homes received grants to update their heating systems.

At present, many homes in so-called "banned" areas are again using smoky coal, blocks and peat.

In my own area, the smell of smoke emitting from the chimneys is horrific.

I telephoned City Hall several times, but did not receive a definite answer: Is it legal (or not) to burn smoky coal? No one could give me a straight answer.

Perhaps someone from the City Hall could reply now?
