Classical music cuts a bum note
I write regarding recent correspondence concerning the present state of classical music and opera funding in Northern Ireland.
Over previous years, we have seen a considerable fall in financial support for classical music and funding in general here is in dire straits.
Belfast Music Society manages valiantly to support Chamber and Lieder concerts annually, but Ulster Orchestra concerts have become somewhat lightweight as a result of the funding shortfall.
Northern Ireland really needs to attract international classical artists, such as Andras Schiff, Till Fellner, Cecilia Bartoli and Anne Sophie Mutter, whom the National Concert Hall in Dublin manages to book. There are many artists here with talent. Alas, most have to seek their careers abroad.
