Council must give Irish a place

Pobal, the umbrella advocacy organisation for the Irish-speaking community, should like to congratulate Armagh Irish speakers for raising the issue of Irish language signage and services in the Armagh District Council area.

On Monday this week, more than 200 local people took part in a picket of Armagh council buildings to show support for greater visibility for the Irish language in the area and to highlight the positive contribution of the Irish language to the local economy and cultural life.

Ten years after the ratification of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages, there is still little visible difference in the council's treatment of the Irish-speaking section of the community.

Pobal urges the council to respond as it should, with fair treatment for the whole community.
