Cyclist insurance is right way to go

I read with interest the piece by Lindy McDowell on the issue of cyclists' insurance (Life, December 2).

As she points out, the vast majority of cyclists are responsible and careful. Many thousands of us are insured and have been for many years.

All cycle club members are required to be insured for cycling on the road and many non-club folk also have suitable insurance.

The general impression is that most people regard cyclists as not having any form of insurance and that needs rectifying.

If there is to be a push for cyclists to have insurance, get those drivers off the road who don't (but should) have insurance first.

Remember, too, a cyclist is a cyclist is a cyclist - no matter what age. That means anyone who can ride a bike from, say, the age of five or six, must have some form of insurance.
