Derry people in favour of new Asda

Re 'Ulster retailers furious at new Asda store plan'. (Belfast Telegraph, Nov 15)

Whilst we welcome all views on our plans for a new Asda store in Londonderry, it is clear comments of Martin McCrossan of the City Centre Traders and Business Forum are in opposition to the majority of people in the city.

We now have 16 stores across Northern Ireland, but we are not represented in Derry and this is a situation we are determined to rectify. Shoppers travelling to Strabane or further to Coleraine to visit an ASDA store is ridiculous.

Crescent Link Retail Park provides an excellent location for a new store as well as creating up to 350 new full and part-time jobs.

As part of our consultation with the local community, we carried out a two-day public exhibition to get the views of shoppers. This resulted in 97% of respondents specifically supporting our plans for a store at Crescent Link - a clear endorsement of the development. Councillors, sitting on the planning committee, further endorsed this view and this reflects the opinion of most people in Derry.
