Drivers should look at their Highway Code

Bill Mac (Write Back, November 15) asks what is the purpose of the green cycle boxes at traffic lights and what their legal status is.

The answer to his questions can be found in the Highway Code, rules 175-178 (the section on junctions controlled by traffic lights).

Rule 178 says: 'Motorists must stop at the first white line reached and should avoid blocking the way or encroaching on the marked area at other times e.g if the junction ahead is blocked.

'Allow cyclists time and space to move off when the green signal shows.'

If Bill Mac consults the relevant page of the Highway Code he will find a helpful diagram showing the correct use of the green boxes.
