Edith wasn't a social worker

On behalf of the Northern Ireland Association of Social Workers (NIASW), I wish to point out an error in a headline in the Belfast Telegraph.

The headline accompanying Lisa Smyth's report on Edith McGaughey - 'Abusive, neglectful social worker struck off' (News, March 6) - is incorrect.

For the protection of the public, the title 'social worker' is legally protected and cannot be used by anyone who does not meet the requirements.

Ms McGaughey was, in fact, a support worker - not a qualified and registered social worker.

Mistakes like these do nothing to improve public confidence in our much-maligned profession.

Chair, NIASW
