Education minister betrayed city’s Irish school

The announcement on July 5 by the Education minister is a slap in the face for the children, staff and parents of Bunscoil Bheann Mhadagáin in north Belfast.

For years the school has been campaigning for new purpose-built premises.

This campaign has intensified over the last few years as the site for the proposed new build became available and every other hurdle seemed to have been overcome.

The minister and her officials have consistently told the school, parents and other concerned parties that the school was, like others in the same position, part of a review process, and that an announcement would come in due course.

To discover then, via the media, upon the eventual announcement on the review being made, that not only was the school building not to be approved, but that it now appears that the school was never part of the review process in the first place, is scandalous.

This minister should resign immediately as it has become abundantly clear that she has betrayed the trust placed in her by the parents, teachers and especially the children of Bunscoil Bheann Mhadagáin.
