Enough home-grown nurses to staff NHS

I was most interested in Janice Smyth's assertion (News, July 7) that without recruitment from the EU the health service in Northern Ireland will collapse.

I wonder how this can be when the nursing course at Queen's University is over-subscribed every year, and I've spoken to many nurses who, after graduation, have had to go to England and further afield because they can't get jobs here. Others work in nursing homes. The reasons given to me were: "They prefer to bring nurses from abroad as they pay them less, or employ agency nurses and pay them more." Doesn't make sense, does it?
