Flag-flying damaging the tourist industry

Tourism is now one of the main economic drivers which Newry, Mourne and Down District Council are continuing to promote as part of their strategy to regenerate the region.

Council tourism and events teams are working hard to promote tourism areas, such as Dundrum, and deliver a product for the betterment of the people in this area.

Therefore, it is greatly disappointing to learn that a party of Americans travelled from Belfast, but once they got to Dundrum village, they turned around again because they felt uncomfortable with the flags.

How deeply disappointing it is to learn of tourists deciding not to stop off in Dundrum village because of the proliferation of flags. If both council and business owners in Dundrum are seeking to encourage visitors and tourists to stop off, then there needs to be a solution to the whole issue of flag-flying.

People should realise that when they erect these flags, all they are actually doing is discouraging international tourists from stopping, the total opposite of that which the council and business owners are trying to do.
