Football needs to sort out its referee mess
Another Saturday of Irish League Premiership matches and the talking points are not the games but the referees.
The present controversy about the standard of refereeing in the Irish League has been brewing for some seasons now and everyone has had enough.
At a time when clubs are trying to attract fans into their grounds by improving their stadia, kicking out sectarianism and introducing small-sided games for kids, the only ingredient not improving is refereeing.
I am old enough to remember that, in the 1950s and early-1960s, referees were brought over from Britain to officiate at Irish League matches. They were professional and fair, which is sadly lacking in today's game.
Perhaps we should go back to impartial referees from Britain coming for games until the IFA sorts out this sorry mess.
