Free Travel Pass for pensioners is a real lifeline

As MLAs debate the continuation of the Pensioners' Travel Pass scheme, perhaps they need to do a bit of research into the long-term cost to pensioners' lives.

Long may Nelson McCausland and the DUP uphold the pensioners' free travel scheme. I hope they are aware of the hidden costs to the health service if it is removed.

Pensioners, at present, are able to remain both mentally and physically healthy, mobile and independent. This reduces the years in which they will be dependent on others.

At a time when the younger members of their families have to work and are unable to take their elderly to appointments etc, these passes can be a lifeline.

Remember: many pensioners have worked and paid tax and insurance contributions.

They have paid their dues. They deserve an improved quality of life in their latter years.
