Freedom not a gift to be granted by the UK

Trevor Ringland's "constitutional preference" is that Northern Ireland remains part of the United Kingdom (Write Back, June 15).

What right have unionists to force their unionism/Britishness on Irish people, who have no allegiance to the British UK state?

According to Trevor, the principle of consent means that Northern Ireland MPs can aspire to have a say in the government of the United Kingdom.

Regardless of the so-called principle of consent, Irish people have a fundamental right to be governed through their own national parliament.

The British people assert their right to freedom. Irish people have exactly the same right to freedom. It is not a British gift to be granted under certain conditions.
