Government must protect retailers

Following your Business View (September 8) on the sad demise of Carter, an exceptional retailer, I write as a fellow independent retailer who has similarly worked hard through all the grim and dangerous days of the Troubles, to find the massive Government-sponsored clamour for even more shopping developments a disgrace.

The recent hysteria in relation to a proposed John Lewis store, be it in Lisburn or Belfast, takes no account of the cost to local retailers who get no Government help, no rent or rates relief and no thanks for keeping this place going when House of Fraser or John Lewis or Ikea didn't want to know. It is time for the Government to protect small shopkeepers or soon there will be none of us left.
