Homegrown heroes needed

I suspect Martin Orr of Letterkenny (Write Back, June 12) is trying to wind up Northern Ireland fans by suggesting that the 1990 team represented "us" better than the 1958 team.

Well, Martin, you have succeeded to some extent! I am surprised that you regard the 1990 team as representing "you" - this was a squad containing one Welsh, two Scots, and 12 - yes, 12 - English players.

I know that most of them qualified under the "does your granny come from Ireland?" rule, but honestly, Martin, seven out of 22 born on the island of Ireland?

And were they really that good? Five matches, no wins in normal time, two goals in total. I admit that when the O'Leary penalty went in to clinch victory against Romania, my son and I leapt to our feet and cheered in the French bar where we watched it, but that team was not "us" like the 1958, 1982, or 1986 "us" who were almost exclusively homegrown.
