While out driving on Saturday I passed a field with 20 or so horses.
An unusual sight, I made further inquiries and was horrified to learn these horses were probably waiting to go for slaughter. The number of thoroughbred horses, initially bred for racing or other equestrian pursuits and now being sold for 'beef', is a scandal.
It is irresponsible to encourage breeding if no provision is made for horses who do not "make the grade".
The racing industry must surely have some responsibility for horses' welfare. Do the people who attend equestrian events realise what is going on?
