Labour raised standards for all of public

Eamonn McCann is very scathing about the leadership of the Labour Party (11.01.11). He gives the impression there was no difference between the recent years of the Labour government and the Thatcherite period before that.

Readers who have experienced the improved funding in health and education, the improvement in the position of pensioners, the Educational Maintenance Allowance and the minimum wage know that this is nonsense. Thirteen years of Labour government made a vast difference in improving living standards, rights and opportunities for the majority of the public.

As we experience a return to the Tory way, most people will regret the passing of Labour's emphasis on the protection of ordinary working families.

Secretary, Labour Party in Northern Ireland
