Let Republic join Commonwealth

Only a few years ago, it was inconceivable to envisage Queen Elizabeth II embarking on an official state visit to Ireland.

Then again, it was also unthinkable to imagine Fianna Fail winning fewer seats than Fine Gael or Labour in a general election.

Now that Enda Kenny has risen to power with a strong mandate from the people, he should celebrate Her Majesty's arrival to Dublin by doing something bold and daring.

Fine Gael, which has traditionally been recognised as the Commonwealth Party, has a golden opportunity to rejoin the Commonwealth and send a powerful message to our friends and neighbours in Britain that we are serious about making a break with our acrimonious and bitter past and paving the way to a brighter and more progressive future.
