Liam is wrong on bilingual Irish speakers

I READ Liam Clarke's memo to Caitriona Ruane (DebateNI, October 17). I readily confess to not being enough of an expert in education, or linguistics, to comment on many of his points.

I do question, however, his statement towards the end of the article: "There are now no native speakers alive who aren't also fluent in English."

I live in an Irish-speaking area and I know a number of native speakers who are by no means fluent in English.

They suffer, as do all people who wish to live their lives through Irish, from the overbearing compulsion of the English language, even in that part of Ireland which purports to encourage the use of Irish.
