Longer runway reduces noise
It is unfortunate that the application to extend the runway at George Best Belfast City Airport has been withdrawn.
The extension is needed to extend the range of aircraft departing to more distant destinations.
More fuel means that the aircraft are heavier and need more time to accelerate to take-off speeds at the same thrust level.
This does not increase noise. In fact, a longer runway has the potential to reduce noise.
The pilot may elect to use a reduced thrust take-off with a longer runway. Using less thrust than full-rated thrust extends engine-life, but the aircraft needs more time to accelerate.
Thus, a longer runway can reduce noise and provide reduced maintenance costs.
As time passes, aircraft noise is constantly reducing. The Boeing 787 is an example of what the future holds.
