Maternity unit triumph and about time too

Sixteen years after staff and women's groups, began a long journey to achieve a new regional maternity, the announcement to build a new maternity unit on the Royal site was welcomed with a sigh of relief.

The current maternity hospital has not been fit for purpose for decades. Like thousands of others my wife and I have witnessed the marvel of the Royal Maternity.

Our son was born seven weeks early in 2008 and this week our identical twin boys were delivered. Both boys are been looked after by the most dedicated staff. But why did people have to campaign for 16 years for a new unit? Why did it take seven consultations and six health ministers before a decision to build was made?

I wish to congratulate all those involved in the campaign for their determination to get the best for women and babies across the north. Unfortunately, their work is not done: the campaign for a new children's hospital must begin today. Let's hope it doesn't take so long to achieve.
