McCreary's image of Pope is flawed
Obviously reporters need to write tactfully to maintain access to their sources, but how can you call Joseph Ratzinger a "sincere and gentle intellectual" as Alf McCreary does? (Comment, September 16).
This man was the long-time head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. He was the Curia's witchfinder-general and Vatican hard-man, author of Dominus Lesus, which rubbishes every other faith on the planet, asserting Rome as the supreme and sole true church.
He is a man whose handling of clerical abuse when a cardinal was not above criticism and who, as Pope, has failed to react to the current scandal with anything approaching Christian concern. He still talks down the use of condoms in Africa at the expense of promoting the spread of AIDS.
Sincere, perhaps. Intellectual, possibly. But gentle?
