McDonald ill-informed on Leftist unity

Henry McDonald seems to miss one or two points in his plea for unity of the left (Comment, June 10).

The next two elections will be fought on the single transferable vote system, so we do not need single agreed candidates.

He also omits to mention that the Labour Party and the Co-operative Party will be fighting those elections with their own distinctive policies.

Could it also be the case that the SDLP will fight as a Labour party and not a nationalist party?

Surely what we need is some common policies and an agreement to seek transfers.

On the other hand, he may be right about the political sectarianism of the left and we may have to agree with the poet who wrote:

Left speaks to left and what a din they make,
