Merkel has kept Kenny in check over border
It is not the present administrative border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland becoming an EU border, in the event of Brexit being effected, that worries Enda Kenny: it is an EU border not only within, but between these islands that is worrying. Northern Ireland is now merely, for him, a pawn to be played in that matter.
When, on July 12 last, he raised with Angela Merkel that consideration be given to the matter of the "border" and the "common travel area" within and between these islands as constituting a special relationship, he was told - some say snubbed - that there is nothing special about Ireland in the EU; it is but one of 27 other countries.
