Most MLAs are surplus to requirement

At last, Peter Robinson has recognised that Stormont is top-heavy with MLAs and wants their number reduced to 75 to ease the financial situation.

Personally, I still believe 30 members would be sufficient. Why should people who have lost their job, car or home still have to pay tax - albeit through VAT - to keep all those who are surplus to requirements in a well-paid job?

Also, the Office of deputy First Minister should be abolished at the next election.

The private sector is suffering with staff reductions and redundancies, so it is time Stormont led by example and started a massive cull of staff.
