Mugabe claim is over-the-top

NEVER before have local housing associations been likened to one of the world's most oppressive dictators – Robert Mugabe (Write Back, August 2).

Not only is your correspondent, 'Concerned, Newtownabbey', completely over-the-top in his rhetoric, he has also got the facts wrong.

He says that, in Great Britain, tenant ballots are the norm if social housing providers intend to merge. That's false; ballots of this kind are very rare.

He also suggests that mergers can result in the ripping up of secure tenancy agreements. Again, this is not correct. All existing tenancies will be honoured.

Building on high levels of tenant satisfaction, three north Belfast housing associations are coming together to offer their customers an even better service. All rights and tenancies of existing residents will be protected.

The new association will be regulated by Government in the same way and tenants will still have recourse to the Ombudsman.

In tough times, housing associations are taking action to ensure they can offer more for less.
