Nationalists must assert their rights
According to Malachi O'Doherty [Comment, September 11], "If Northern Ireland cannot be governed without nationalists then that imposes a responsibility on them to make it work".
What's the point of being a "nationalist" if you're not asserting your right to national freedom?
The civil rights movement didn't assert the Irish right to freedom. It wanted "ordinary British rights for British citizens". To paraphrase Malachi, "the concept of freedom was not part of the debate". Therein lies the problem.
