New law would change society
Those who back same-sex marriage have a concept of marriage as a single legal framework applying to all - irrespective of biology or sexual orientation (Write Back, January 2).
People who pontificate on the meaning of marriage and declare it must be between one man and one woman are wrong. History and anthropology show the many forms it has taken at different times and in different societies.
But current law defines marriage not just as the union of one man and one woman, but as the sexual union between them. So the question is: will the new law of marriage include reference to sex? If it does not, it will change the concept of marriage and have consequences for society.
