Over the years, Northern Ireland Electricity have dug a lot of holes for poles. But at the recent public inquiry into the controversial North-South interconnector, they dug holes for themselves. Commissioner Aidan McCooey, who chaired the inquiry, deserves a medal for keeping a straight face as NIE's planning application was a total joke.
The inquiry began on March 6, but didn't even get past the preliminary stage such was the extent of the inaccuracies in NIE's documentation. Mr McCooey halted proceedings on March 20 and ordered the Department of Environment to re-advertise the application properly.
The serious concerns of the objectors were also shared by the Planning Appeals Commissioners, who were not fooled by the department's attempts to try and brush them under the carpet.
