Olympians a credit to the United Kingdom

In what is a good news story for a change, I want to congratulate Team GB and their outstanding success at the Rio Olympics.

To finish second in the medal table behind the United States is a remarkable achievement.

As someone who is not that interested in sporting events, I found myself having a great sense of pride and respect for the athletes of Team GB, who gave their all and behaved impeccably.

The GB and Northern Ireland team finished with a total of 67 medals, including 27 gold, 23 silver and 17 bronze. It was the best result from Team GB since the British Olympic Association was formed in 1905.

Credit must go to the leadership of the BOA, together with the aid of National Lottery funding - both of which have made a great difference to sport in the United Kingdom.

The athletes, their coaches and support staff must all be thanked for their very hard work.
