Our laws help the gutter Press

Tim Luckhurst (Comment, November 27), like so many people close to the media, claims existing laws keep the media in check.

But whereas criminal law can deal with some malpractices (if and when the police get around to investigating), others are controlled only by the civil law and none but the rich can afford to contemplate suing for libel.

On this basis alone, the gutter Press has thrived for years.
