Parties should back De Blasio's ban on parade
THE decision by New York mayor Bill De Blasio to boycott the St Patrick's day parade over the homophobic ban on the LGBT community is a progressive step.
De Blasio is the first mayor to boycott the parade because of the ban, which was put in place by the Ancient Order of Hibernians in 1991, when the Irish Gay Lesbian organisation applied to march.
The SDLP and Sinn Fein, as well as the political parties in the south, all march in New York.
They should follow De Blasio's progressive example and boycott the St Patrick's Day parade.
