Picture of happy days at school

Malachi O'Doherty's article about his first day at school (Comment, August 31) was illustrated by a photograph captioned 'a typical primary school lesson in the 1950s'. The picture actually shows a class in Connor House Preparatory School in Bangor, almost certainly around 1966.

The teacher is the late Maureen Fetherstonhaugh, headmistress of a small Bangor school I attended (1959-1961). When the school closed she moved to Connor House, where she continued to provide (together with Joy Peden, Mary Hayes, Derek Wilkins, Morley Hopkins and Gordon Thomson) a standard of teaching excellence for which I remain deeply grateful. Sadly, Connor House closed in June.

Unlike Malachi, I have happy memories of my first school days, thanks mainly to the enthusiastic, compassionate and dedicated Maureen Fetherstonhaugh.
