Politicians have priorities wrong

I SOMETIMES think the world of politics has its values upside down.

Politicians appear to be obsessed with flag issues, Maze prison, silencing whistleblowers and supporting protesters on 'their' side of the fence.

To this ordinary man in the street it seems that our political leaders could do so much more if they concerned themselves more deeply with integrating education, improving the health service, increasing the number of police officers, fighting for dignity for elderly people and producing jobs for our workforce.

Of course flags, prisons and protesters affect voting patterns. Is it really more important to stay in power than to follow ethical pathways? Must we always prioritise 'our side' over everything?

Is there a statesman/states-woman bold enough to follow a different path?
