Polling station staff's payments need probed
I read with interest Rebecca Black's article entitled "Concerns over lack of adequate training for polling station workers with election looming" (News, February 10).
The paragraph which reads, "Staff receive a fee for working on polling day as well as mileage claims if the person is responsible for the transportation of ballot boxes" is of particular concern.
Actually, the fee allegedly incorporates an allowance for attendance at training as well as for travel to and from the polling station - regardless of whether you transport ballot boxes.
The upshot of all this is that staff responsible for transporting boxes get mileage paid twice.
Also, those staff who hitch a lift with fellow staff get a built-in mileage allowance, whether they are out any expense or not.
Surely this can't be right?
