Prof Faris was devoted to his role at Victoria

In The Registrar on Friday, March 4 there appeared a column relating to Professor John Faris, who had died on February 26, 2011.

His many friends must be grateful for your summary of his wide-ranging interests and contribution to various aspects of Ulster life.

There is however one omission; his devoted service to Victoria College.

His connection with this school was life-long, his mother Mrs Grace Faris having been a revered headmistress from 1930 to 1951.

John was himself a governor of Victoria from 1969 to 1989 and a highly-respected chairman of the Board from 1976 to 1985.

As his successor I can testify to his meticulous record-keeping, kindly concern for every aspect of school life and unfailing courtesy to staff and fellow-governors.
