Protestantism used to deny Irish rights

According to Alf McCreary (Saturday Review, July 29), he has frequently asked why people feel the need to don a sash and walk the public highways to prove that they are Protestants.

Usually, there are as many Union flags as sashes to prove how loyal and British they are, as well as Protestant. To quote Alf: “However, in a free world, they have every right to join the Orange Order”.

In fact, British sovereignty over Irish people means their neighbours are not free. No Protestant Church leader has ever publicly expressed concern about Protestantism being used to deny Irish people in Northern Ireland their right to national freedom.
